Avengers #8 (September 1965) introduced Kang the Conqueror, a time-traveling despot who would become one of the Avengers' most persistent and consequential adversaries, later revealed to share identity threads with Rama-Tut and Immortus across decades of Marvel continuity. Scripted by Stan Lee with pencils by Don Heck and inks by Dick Ayers, the issue arrived during the Avengers' formative Silver Age run and is cited in all major price guides as a foundational villain-origin key for the team's rogues' gallery. The Jack Kirby-Chic Stone cover, depicting Kang's futuristic conquest of the present day, has become closely associated with the character's earliest visual identity.

Demand for the issue is driven almost entirely by Kang's enduring relevance, reinforced by his prominent live-action use as a central multiversal threat in Marvel's film and streaming properties, which has kept collector interest well above that of adjacent Avengers issues from the same run. Census data shows a large surviving population across the mid and low grades, keeping raw-copy pricing accessible, but the FMV curve steepens sharply above 9.0, with 9.4 copies already commanding roughly five times the 9.0 price and higher grades thinning dramatically. The scarcity of 9.6 and 9.8 copies against sustained demand has pushed top-census results into a different market entirely from the raw and mid-grade trade.

The book functions as a two-tier collectible: a widely available, affordably priced key for Avengers and Silver Age Marvel collectors in the low and mid grades, and a blue-chip, auction-driven asset at the CGC 9.6-9.8 level, where population reports show only a handful of copies and buyers include high-end key-issue investors and character-specific Kang collectors. Grading sensitivity is pronounced given the thin registry at the top, meaning small differences in census population can move top-grade pricing significantly, while the broad base of graded and raw copies keeps entry-level collecting straightforward.
