Cover shows moderate wear consistent with a mid-grade Silver Age book: visible surface creasing and texture wrinkling across the cover (notably horizontal stress lines through the logo and upper portion), some corner softness at the top corners, and slight edge wear along the borders. There is noticeable waviness/warping to the cover stock suggesting past moisture exposure or handling stress, though no major tears or missing pieces are apparent. The book is in a protective sleeve which creates glare, obscuring finer surface detail; interior pages and back cover were not assessed.

Avengers #27 (April 1966) introduces Jacques Duquesne, the Swordsman, a circus-trained mercenary who debuts here as an antagonist before his later redemption arc and Avengers membership. The issue was scripted by Stan Lee with art by Don Heck, part of the mid-1960s run that steadily expanded the team's rogues gallery and supporting cast during a period when the Avengers roster and villain roster were both taking shape as ongoing Marvel institutions. As a character-origin issue rather than a hero debut, it sits a tier below the line's marquee keys but remains a fixture in Silver Age Avengers key checklists.
The census reflects a well-preserved, heavily submitted book, with nearly 500 CGC Universal copies graded and nearly a hundred sales recorded across the mid grades. Demand is concentrated at the high end: values hold flat and modest through most of the Fine-to-Near Mint range before spiking sharply at 9.6, where population thins and completionist Avengers and Swordsman collectors compete for top-end copies. The gap between the 9.4 and 9.6 price points, and the near-total absence of graded 9.8s, indicates a book that is common in mid-grade but genuinely scarce in true Gem Mint.
This is a supporting-character key that trades actively but without the volatility of a first-hero-appearance book. Mid-grade copies move steadily among Silver Age Avengers run-builders and are readily available at modest cost, making the book approachable for collectors assembling a complete 1960s Avengers set. High-grade and especially 9.8 copies, given their extreme scarcity on the census, will command outsized premiums whenever they surface, appealing mainly to registry-focused collectors and Swordsman/Avengers specialists rather than general Silver Age investors.
