Armageddon 2001 #1 launched DC's 1991 summer crossover event, a time-travel epic in which the mysterious Waverider journeys back through the DC Universe hunting the identity of a future tyrant called Monarch. Written by Denny O'Neil and Archie Goodwin with art by Dan Jurgens, the issue introduces Waverider and sets the premise that would ripple through dozens of annuals that summer. The event is remembered in fan circles as much for its behind-the-scenes drama as its story: DC's intended reveal that Captain Atom becomes Monarch was leaked ahead of publication, forcing a last-minute change to Hawk in the printed conclusion.
