AMAZING ADVENTURES #5

This 1961 pre-direct/newsstand-era book shows significant wear typical of the grade: heavy spine stress with multiple ticks and a vertical crease running through the lower spine area, corner rounding and blunting at all four corners, and visible surface creasing across the monster's arm on the right side of the cover. There is discoloration/browning along the top edge and left edge, along with fraying at the top-left corner tip. The cover also shows a small loss/chip along the left edge near the spine. Interior and back cover were not assessed from this photo.

Amazing Adventures #5, cover-dated September 1961, is an issue of Marvel's short-lived Silver Age science-fiction and fantasy anthology, produced under editor Stan Lee with art contributions from Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko during the period just before the studio's superhero line took shape. Like its sister anthologies of the era, the title ran speculative fiction and monster short stories with rotating casts rather than continuing characters. The series itself is historically notable mainly as a predecessor: after six issues it was retitled Amazing Fantasy, the run that would conclude with Amazing Fantasy #15 and the debut of Spider-Man. This issue carries no first appearance of an ongoing character.

Certified population data shows a modest but not scarce run overall, with the bulk of graded copies falling in the 4.0 to 7.5 range and pricing in that band generally under $250. Values rise sharply above 8.0, where certified copies become genuinely scarce – only a handful exist at 8.5 and above, and none has yet reached 9.6 or 9.8. The steep climb from the low hundreds in mid grade to several thousand dollars at 9.0-9.2 reflects that scarcity curve rather than any story-driven demand, since no single sale anchors the top of the range beyond a lone 9.2 result.

The book's audience is narrow: primarily Kirby and Ditko completists, pre-Marvel-Age anthology collectors, and those assembling a run bridging Atlas-era monster comics into the early Marvel Universe. Reading and mid-grade copies trade inexpensively and are readily available, while any copy reaching the top of the certified population draws outsized attention simply because so few have ever been submitted at that level. It is not a book driven by key-issue demand, but it holds steady interest as a piece of the creative pipeline that produced Amazing Fantasy #15.
