Action Comics #339 (DC Comics, July 1966) arrived during the mature Mort Weisinger-edited Superman era, when the Action Comics anthology format regularly paired a lead Superman story with Supergirl backup features. The issue is representative of the dependable Silver Age Superman machine of the period, produced by DC's veteran bullpen, with Curt Swan's clean, classicist pencils defining the visual identity of Superman comics throughout the decade. It does not carry a recognized first appearance, origin, or landmark creative milestone, and is best understood as a solid, collectible entry in a long-running and highly collected flagship title rather than a discrete key issue.
Market data shows a typical Silver Age demand curve: modest values in mid and lower grades that climb steeply toward the top of the census, where only a handful of copies exist above 9.0 and just two copies have reached 9.8. Sales volume is thin at the extremes, meaning single transactions can meaningfully move the reported price at those grades, but the overall trajectory is consistent with unspectacular back-issue demand met by real scarcity in true high grade. There is no evidence of speculative spikes or renewed attention tied to adaptations, reprints, or anniversary coverage; pricing reflects steady, title-driven collector interest rather than event-driven demand.
This is a book for Superman-title completists and Silver Age DC collectors building consistent runs of Action Comics, rather than key-issue investors. Raw copies in low and mid grade trade as inexpensive filler for long-box collections and rarely command attention beyond condition and completeness, while CGC-slabbed copies in the 9.0+ range appeal to registry-focused buyers chasing census scarcity. Given the small population at 9.6 and 9.8, a well-preserved high-grade slab can command outsized premiums relative to the rest of the run, but overall the book trades on gradual, incremental value rather than sharp appreciation.
