The Monster of Frankenstein #2 continues Marvel's early-1970s expansion of its horror line, following the commercial success of Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf by Night with a direct adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel. Writer Gary Friedrich and artist Mike Ploog picked up the story begun in issue #1, with Ploog's loose, animation-trained linework giving the Monster and its gothic settings the same moody atmosphere he brought to his other Marvel horror assignments of the period. The series would be retitled simply Frankenstein starting with issue #6, running to #18 in 1975, placing this issue early in a short-lived but distinctive corner of Marvel's Bronze Age horror output.

Demand for this issue is driven less by any landmark event within its pages than by collector interest in Ploog's art and in completing runs from Marvel's 1970s horror line. Unlike issue #1, which carries first-issue premium as the opening chapter of Marvel's Frankenstein adaptation, issue #2 functions as a mid-story chapter and lacks a recognized first appearance, origin, or notable creative milestone of its own. It trades in the shadow of the line's bigger horror keys, with a print run and survival profile typical of lower-selling early-1970s Marvel titles, meaning high-grade material is scarce relative to demand even though absolute prices stay modest.
