Launched in 1988, Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme returned the character to a solo ongoing title after the shared-billing years of Strange Tales, with Peter B. Gillis writing and Richard Case on pencils. This second issue carries a cover by Michael Golden, whose comparatively sparse output through the late 1980s makes his covers a recurring point of interest for collectors of the period, and it puts an unusually broad cast on the page for an early-run installment: Clea, Dormammu, Doctor Doom, Doctor Druid, Magik, the Scarlet Witch, Hercules, Gaea and Sara Wolfe all appear. Case would go on to define the visual character of the Grant Morrison Doom Patrol shortly afterward, which gives his work here a modest retrospective interest, and the series itself ran ninety issues into the mid-1990s, becoming the character's longest single run.

Market behavior is that of a common Copper Age mid-run book. Print runs and survivorship were high, the issue carries no first appearance, origin or death, and it has never attracted the speculative attention that periodically lifts Doctor Strange keys around film and streaming announcements. Raw copies move as fill material for run collectors and are commonly absorbed into multi-issue lots rather than sold individually. Certified examples are essentially absent from the census, which is itself informative: the economics of submission do not support grading the book, so any high-grade slab that appears trades on scarcity of certification rather than on scarcity of the comic.

Buyers are run completists assembling the 1988-1996 series, Michael Golden cover collectors, and readers following Richard Case's early work. In low and mid grades the issue is a commodity, and condition tolerance is wide because replacement supply is deep and cheap. Interest concentrates instead at the very top of the scale, where a newsstand copy strong enough to justify certification is genuinely uncommon; the sensible approach for that tier is patient acquisition of an already-graded example rather than submission, since grading and shipping costs exceed the underlying value of the book by a wide margin.
