Cover shows strong gloss and sharp corners with no visible creasing or color breaks. Minor handling wear is visible along the top edge and a slight softness at the top right corner. Published with an April 1986 cover date, The Thing #34 comes from the closing stretch of Ben Grimm's first solo ongoing, a series that ran thirty-six issues and spent its final year rebuilding the character away from the Fantastic Four. Mike Carlin's script pits the Thing against a dying Sphinx while the Puppet Master schemes in the background, and the supporting cast includes Sharon Ventura and Dennis Dunphy, both introduced a handful of issues earlier and both destined for larger roles – Ventura as the second Ms. Marvel and later the She-Thing, Dunphy as D-Man in Captain America. Paul Neary supplied the cover. The issue itself carries no first appearance or origin, and it is properly catalogued as a well-made mid-run Copper Age superhero comic rather than a key.

Market behavior follows that assessment. Print runs from 1986 were large, survivorship is high, and the title has never developed the speculative following attached to the Fantastic Four proper, so raw copies trade in the bulk-box range regardless of whether the copy is newsstand or direct. What movement exists is driven by run collectors filling out the thirty-six-issue set and by peripheral interest in Sharon Ventura and Dunphy whenever Fantastic Four casting news circulates. The certified market is nearly dormant: population is small because almost nobody pays grading fees on the issue, and the handful of top-grade slabs that surface price off the general Copper Age no-key floor rather than off any demand curve specific to this book.

Buyers divide cleanly. The overwhelming majority are completists assembling the run or Thing character collectors, and they buy raw, often in lots, where condition sensitivity is low and the spread between a well-read copy and a sharp one is a couple of dollars. A separate and much thinner group pursues high-grade newsstand copies of Copper Age Marvel across the board; for them the scarcity of clean, square-spined 1986 newsstand stock, not the story content, is the argument. Expect raw copies to move quickly at modest numbers and certified copies to sit until the right registry or run-in-slab buyer appears.
