Cover shows moderate wear consistent with a 1964 book: visible spine stress lines and slight color rub along the spine, a small crease near the top left corner, and minor edge wear at corners. There is some surface sheen loss and light handling wear across the cover, plus a faint scratch/crease near the top staple area. Interior and back cover were not assessed; grade based solely on this front cover photo.

Strange Tales #116 (Marvel, January 1964) presents one of the most talked-about confrontations of Marvel's early Silver Age solo-hero anthology run: the Human Torch, manipulated by the Puppet Master's control over a captive Thing, is forced into open combat with his Fantastic Four teammate. Scripted by Stan Lee with a cover credited to Jack Kirby and interior art by Dick Ayers, the issue captures Marvel's house style at its most kinetic, staging a hero-versus-hero brawl years before such match-ups became a genre staple. The cover, depicting the Torch's flame engulfing the Thing mid-punch, is frequently cited in price guides and collector retrospectives as one of the strongest images from the Strange Tales Human Torch stint.
Demand for the issue is driven almost entirely by that cover and the character pairing rather than any first appearance, and the certified population data reflects a book that was well-collected but not treated as precious in its day: over 380 CGC Universal copies exist, with the bulk clustered in the 6.0–9.0 range and a thin, sharply escalating tail above 9.4. The price curve steps up dramatically at the top end, jumping from roughly $600 at 9.4 to nearly $1,900 at 9.6, indicating that high-grade survivors are scarce enough to command outsized premiums even without a deep sales history at the very top of the census.
The book trades as a solid mid-tier Silver Age Marvel: affordable in low and mid grades for readers and Fantastic Four/Human Torch completists, but a genuine condition rarity above 9.4 where a handful of collectors compete for a very small pool of pristine copies. Buyers assembling a run of Strange Tales or a Human Torch/Thing crossover-themed collection will find raw copies plentiful and inexpensive, while advanced Silver Age cover-art collectors are the primary market for the rare 9.6–9.8 certified examples.
