// Condition analysis
This 1964 Silver Age book pre-dates the direct/newsstand split so no variant designation applies. Visible defects include noticeable spine wear with stress lines and small ticks along the spine edge, corner softening at the top left, and a small chip/tear near the left edge staple area. There is minor surface wear and slight color rub at the top edge, plus some waviness suggesting handling; the book is in a protective sleeve which may obscure fine detail. Interior and back cover were not assessed.

Showcase #48 (February 1964) introduced Cave Carson, DC's subterranean adventurer-scientist, in a story scripted by Dave Wood with art by Lee Elias, who also supplied the cover. Arriving amid DC's steady stream of Showcase try-out features during the early Silver Age, Cave Carson never graduated to his own ongoing title in the 1960s, appearing again in Showcase #49 and #50 before fading from regular publication, which has kept the character a relatively obscure footnote compared to contemporaries like the Metal Men or the Silver Age Green Lantern.
The book's market profile reflects that obscurity: a small certified population of roughly three dozen copies, thin sales activity at nearly every grade, and pricing that stays modest even at the top of the census, where no 9.8 has ever been graded and only a single 9.4 exists. Demand has ticked up in recent years as Cave Carson found new visibility through DC's Young Animal imprint reintroduction, but the character's overall collector base remains narrow next to mainstream DC try-out keys, and pricing across the graded population stays comparatively restrained even at mid and high grades.
This is a book for character-completists, Showcase-run collectors, and buyers tracking DC's Young Animal-era revivals rather than a mainstream investment key. Lower-grade raw copies trade as inexpensive curiosities, mid-grade raw copies see occasional interest from Showcase set-builders, and a high-grade certified copy — especially anything approaching the top of the thin census — would likely draw competitive bidding given how rarely such copies surface.
