The cover shows strong gloss and vibrant color with no visible fading. Corners appear sharp with only minor blunting at the top right near the photo inset, and the spine shows no obvious white stress lines or ticks in this view. There is a faint diagonal crease/scuff visible in the lower right quadrant of the artwork, and the book is currently housed in a protective sleeve which limits full assessment of edge wear. Interior pages and back cover were not visible and were not assessed.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea #5 is part of Western Publishing's Gold Key line of licensed comics adapting the Irwin Allen television series of the same name, which followed the crew of the submarine Seaview under Admiral Harriman Nelson and Captain Lee Crane. Joe Certa, known for his long run illustrating Martian Manhunter for DC and other licensed television and adventure titles for Gold Key, provided the interior pencils, giving the book the clean, adventure-strip style typical of Western's television tie-ins of the era. As a licensed property book rather than an original superhero or horror title, it carries no first appearances or origin stories of note and was produced primarily for newsstand and spinner-rack sale to young television viewers rather than as a collectible in its own right.
Market activity for the issue is thin and concentrated at the upper end of the certified population, with the bulk of recorded sales occurring at 9.6 and scattered single sales at surrounding grades; there is no meaningful sales history at 9.8 or in the lower raw grades. This pattern is consistent with a licensed television tie-in title that survives mostly in the hands of a small group of dedicated Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Gold Key completists rather than a broad collector base, and pricing reflects steady but modest demand rather than speculative interest.
The book trades as a lower-tier Silver Age Gold Key title: raw copies in low and mid grade move inexpensively and mostly to readers or series completists filling out a run, while high-grade certified copies appeal to a narrower band of Gold Key and television-adaptation specialists willing to pay a real premium for top-census condition given how few copies exist at 9.6 and above. It is not pursued as an investment-grade key, but well-preserved slabbed copies command outsized prices relative to raw material simply because so few survive in top grade.
