// Archive commentary
Fantastic Four #316 arrived in mid-1988 during Steve Englehart's tenure as writer, with art by Keith Pollard, part of a stretch in which the classic Reed Richards/Sue Storm/Ben Grimm/Johnny Storm lineup had been reshuffled following Reed and Sue's temporary withdrawal from active duty. The roster during this period included the Human Torch, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura), reflecting Marvel's efforts to keep its flagship team title fresh after John Byrne's celebrated run had concluded a few years earlier. The issue is a solid representative of the title's late-1980s creative direction rather than a book tied to any first appearance, origin story, or landmark event.
Market data for this issue is thin: certified census counts are modest across all grades, and recorded sales are scarce even at the top end, with only a single 9.4 sale anchoring the FMV table and no completed 9.8 transactions despite over a dozen copies at that grade in holders. This pattern is typical of a mid-run Copper Age issue that was produced in significant quantities for the direct market and has not attracted sustained collector attention beyond completists of the Fantastic Four run. Demand is driven almost entirely by series collectors filling out long runs rather than by speculative or crossover interest.
This issue trades as a bulk-bin to modest mid-grade item in low grades, with more meaningful appreciation only at the high end of the certified population, where scarcity of graded submissions (rather than genuine desirability) supports elevated but still modest premiums. It suits collectors assembling a complete Fantastic Four run across the Byrne-to-Englehart transition, dealers stocking affordable Copper Age inventory, or archives documenting the title's lineup changes; it is not likely to attract investment-grade interest or command outsized premiums even in top certified grades.
