// Archive commentary
Marvel Tales (vol. 2) launched in 1964 as an anthology vehicle for reprinting Marvel's earliest superhero stories for a new wave of readers who had missed the original low-print-run issues. Issue #3, cover-dated July 1965, continues that program, reprinting an early Amazing Spider-Man adventure from the character's formative run alongside period house ads and other backmatter typical of Marvel's mid-1960s reprint line. The book carries no first appearance of its own, but it preserves, in a more accessible and affordable package, material from Spider-Man's earliest published exploits at a time when original Amazing Spider-Man issues were already becoming difficult to find.
Demand for the issue is driven primarily by Spider-Man reprint completists and Silver Age Marvel anthology collectors rather than key-issue investors. The certified population is thin at the extremes: a single 9.8 sits atop the census with no recorded sale, while 9.4-9.6 copies have traded in the low hundreds of dollars, reflecting genuine scarcity in top grades despite the book's original status as a lower-priority newsstand reprint title. Mid- and low-grade copies trade modestly, consistent with a book valued more for completeness of a Spider-Man or Marvel Tales run than for standalone significance.
This is a book collected in the context of a broader run rather than pursued individually. Silver Age Marvel completists, Spider-Man reprint specialists, and anthology-title collectors form the natural buyer base. Across grades, the market shows a typical Silver Age curve: raw copies in worn condition move for modest sums, mid-grade raw copies trade in the twenties to thirties, and the rare high-grade certified copy commands a outsized premium driven almost entirely by census scarcity rather than any landmark content.
