This Golden Age ACG title shows heavy wear consistent with a well-read Silver/Golden Age transitional book: significant spine wear with multiple tears and chunks missing along the top and bottom spine edges, heavy corner rounding and creasing at all four corners, and a large area of white/paper loss and abrasion across the central figure on the cover (appears to be surface loss or moisture damage). There are multiple cover creases radiating across the image, edge chipping along the right and top borders, and staining/discoloration in the upper right area. Interior and back cover were not assessed from this photo, but front cover condition alone places this in the low grade range.

Adventures into the Unknown #86 (American Comics Group, July 1957) is a mid-run issue of the series widely credited as the first ongoing horror-comics title in the American market, launched in 1948 under editor Richard E. Hughes and running 174 issues through 1967. By 1957 the book was operating under the Comics Code, so its supernatural and science-fiction stories are tamer than the pre-Code EC-style horror that draws the strongest premiums, but the title retained its house strengths: tightly plotted twist tales and clean, characterful art. This issue carries a cover and interior work by Ogden Whitney, ACG's signature draftsman, whose polished, deadpan style is the visual identity most collectors associate with the line.

Demand for this book is driven by three overlapping groups rather than by any single event: ACG completists building the long Adventures into the Unknown run, Ogden Whitney enthusiasts, and Silver Age horror/mystery anthology collectors. It is not a key issue and carries no first appearance, origin, or landmark story, so it trades on aesthetic and set-completion appeal rather than speculation. Code-era ACG issues are also comparatively common in low and mid grades, which keeps the floor modest, while genuinely high-grade copies are scarce because these thin newsprint anthologies were rarely preserved and darker cover stock shows wear readily.

Across grades this is an accessible collector book at the low and middle brackets, where it functions as affordable run filler and is bought accordingly. The upside sits almost entirely at the top of the grade ladder, where the combination of a Whitney cover, an underpopulated census, and a respected historic series can push a top-graded example well beyond what mid-grade activity would suggest. Buyers pursuing investment-grade copies should expect thin, sporadic comps and price accordingly, treating high-grade certified examples as condition rarities rather than liquid keys.
